The Center for Information and Communication Studies (formerly the Center for Culture and Communication Studies) at Fudan University (hereinafter referred to as the Center) was founded in 1984. Following a rigorous review, in 2000 it was designated as a Key Research Base for Humanities and Social Sciences affiliated with China’s Ministry of Education, making it the only research base of its kind in communication studies in China. With dedication from our colleagues that has made it a key research facility for the Ministry of Education, the Center has achieved success in a number of ways. First, it has developed a distinctive set of research criteria and styles for theory-driven and empirically-oriented studies with global vision and local perspective. Second, it has established a research focus for exploring the profound transformation of human society and lifestyles, treating urban communication as our experience field and adopting media change as a viewpoint. Third, it has honed its focus over the years to realize its goals, which include pioneering theoretical and paradigmic innovations based on local experience; leading and elevating the quality of journalism and communication research in China; enhancing researchers' ability to engage in global dialogue, and contributing to the progress of culture and civilization.

The Center is currently the only communication and journalism research facility to sign a contract with China’s High-end Think-tank Alliance of Universities. To address revolutionary changes in communication driven by the global rise of new technologies and national development priorities over the next five years, the Center is dedicating itself to studying “the community of digital cities”. This research will encompass four key areas: theory construction, methodological innovation, analysis of media histories, and examination of communication practices. This approach aims to create a new paradigm for Chinese communication studies and build disciplinary, discursive, and theoretical systems of communication studies with Chinese characteristics.

The Center sees its mission as fostering development of top-notch nation-wide academic communities and flagships for public services, using theoretical and paradigmic innovations as a nexus. We now have over 50 full-time and part-time research fellows; and have co-built multiple research facilities in collaboration with pioneering universities both domestically and internationally. Our regular publication, China Communication Review, showcases our research. We have also organized the Journalism and Communication: Theory and Methods Summer School, which has trained thousands of graduate students and junior scholars over the last 19 years. Our annual event, the “Communication and China: Fudan Forum”, has grown into a nationally recognized platform for academic dialogues and exchanges.
